The Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 with SmartGuide electric toothbrush is one of the latest products in Oral-B’s new generation of smart electric toothbrushes. It features an innovative wireless SmartGuide technology which (surprise, surprise!) will teach you how to brush your teeth more effectively. The toothbrush’s Deep Clean mode is the most effective way to remove plaque that I know of and a large part of why this toothbrush is rocking the charts as well as getting rave reviews on consumer websites.
This Oral-B Precision 5000 review looks at the product’s features, weighs its pros against the cons and then offers you an objective verdict on whether this is a product which represents good value for your money.
Features of the Oral B 5000 Electric Toothbrush
Oral B’s 3D Cleaning Action
This electric toothbrush uses a 3-action process to clean teeth. It rotates, oscillates and pulsates in what Oral-B refers to as 3-D action to provide an easy and quick clean on your teeth, the gums and the spaces in between. This is a considerable improvement on the action of electric toothbrushes which only vibrate.
There is perhaps no other feature which depicts this electric toothbrush’s claim for being a real tech gadget as the SmartGuide. It is a wireless device which connects to your toothbrush by means of a sensor. It monitors your brushing, providing feedback during the process and at the end of it a dentist-style report. This report includes tips about your technique and areas you can improve on to get the most perfect clean. The SmartGuide is so smart that if you apply too much pressure on the gums, a red light blinks on the display as warning. The display is a conspicuous LCD screen which also includes a timer.
Choose from 5 Cleaning Modes
Choose from any of the five cleaning modes to provide the cleaning action which suits your teeth. These modes are:
- Daily Clean
- Gum Care
- Whitening and
- Deep Clean
Provides Floss-Like Clean
The professionally designed floss action of the Oral-B Professional Healthy Clean Precision 5000 toothbrush is a real game-changer. While the manufacturer is keen to add that the Floss-action brush head does not replace the need to floss, the level of cleaning that goes into getting food debris in the narrow gaps between your teeth is impressive. Moreover, this is done with almost effortless ease compared to manual flossing.
Charge Once for a Week’s Usage
On a full charge, the battery gets enough power to take you through a whole week of regular use (i.e. two brushing sessions daily). Oral-B recommends that you should replete the charge completely without any recharges in between charges. At the very least, you should completely discharge the battery once every six months before plugging it to charge fully.
Compatible with 9 Oral-B Replaceable Brush Heads
The Oral-B 5000 electric toothbrush comes with standard electric brush head attachment which is compatible with 9 Oral-B 5000 brush heads namely:
- Floss Action
- ProWhitePrecision Clean
- Precision Clean
- Dual Clean
- Power Tip
Sold with a Mount and Travel Case for Convenience
The SmartGuide is fitted with an easy mount to help you stick it on the bathroom mirror as you brush. A compact travel case is yet another feature you will find convenient especially if you are something of a globetrotter.
How to use the Oral B Professional Healthy Clean Precision 5000 Electric Toothbrush
The Oral-B Professional Care SmartSeries 5000 belongs to a series of Oral-B’s rechargeable toothbrushes which use a combination of rotating and oscillating action to clean teeth. This is decidedly different from using a manual toothbrush. All you have to do is guide the brush head and all the movement is provided by the inbuilt motor.
The unconventional cleaning action of an electric toothbrush requires some getting used to. If this is your very first electric toothbrush, you need to be patient before you get it right.
To use the Oral-B 5000 electric toothbrush correctly, take your mouth to be made of four sections or quadrants: the upper right, lower right, upper left and lower left. You are supposed to spend two minutes making one cleaning pass over the entire mouth, spending approximately 30 seconds for each section. To help you do this, the toothbrush comes with an inbuilt timer, which parses every 30 seconds.
Another feature you will find helpful in using this toothbrush is Oral B’s patented wireless SmartGuide technology. The feature is smart enough to detect if you are guiding the bristles over your gum or the teeth themselves, alerting you if you happen to be pressing too hard. For beginners, getting to grips with using the SmartGuide is often the most difficult aspect of using this toothbrush.
- Pressure sensor automatically stops the pulsation if the brushing action is too hard
- Better at providing gum health than Sonicare’s FlexCare
- Passed as good by dental care organizations around the world
- Comes with a waterproof, ergonomic handle
- Conspicuous display on the handle shows charge level
- Portable charge station included
- The rechargeable battery is not replaceable. That said though, the brush is designed to last for between 4- 6 years with regular charge and daily use. For most people, that is more than adequate value for money.
- Though the Oral-B Professional Healthy Clean Precision 5000 electric toothbrush is compatible with a host of Oral-B’s range of electric toothbrush heads, it is only sold with a single Floss Action brush head. If you find it not adequate to your needs, you will have to order another one at extra cost.
- Does not come with the tongue cleaning mode which is a feature of the Oral-B 7000 series of electric toothbrushes
There was a time when the concept of a smart, electrically powered toothbrush seemed preposterous. If you are one of those people still caught in that time warp, the Oral-B is the perfect product to make you rethink. It takes the whole idea of a smart gadget to a new level. This is by offering a range of movements other than the perfunctory vibrate to help clean teeth. It is also equipped with a handy wireless SmartGuide to ensure you brush your teeth cleanly and offer you tips on areas you can improve to perfect your technique. However, there are certain areas this product could be improved on including offering means to replace the battery when needed as well as including an extra brush head in the shipping package.
